Classic Apple Crumble

A genuinely crunchy, non-soggy apple crumble built on granny smiths, which hold their shape under the buttery oat topping rather than turning to mush.

Serves: 6Time: 50 min

Made with Apple

Ingredients

  • 6-7 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 150g butter, cold and cubed

Method

  1. 1.Heat the oven to 180°C.
  2. 2.Toss the sliced apples with the sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice, and spread into a baking dish.
  3. 3.For the topping, combine the flour, oats and brown sugar in a bowl. Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until it clumps into coarse, buttery crumbs rather than a fine sandy texture; leaving some larger lumps is what gives the top its crunch.
  4. 4.Scatter the topping evenly over the apples.
  5. 5.Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling at the edges.
Granny smiths are the right choice here because they hold their shape rather than collapsing into sauce. If using a sweeter, softer apple, cut the sugar back slightly and expect a softer result.
