Silver Birch

A fast-growing, elegant deciduous shade tree with striking white peeling bark and small leaves that turn buttery yellow in autumn. Be realistic about its eventual size - around 15m tall with a 6m spread, roughly the height of a two-storey house, so it needs real room. The root system is shallow and spreads out just under the surface, so keep it well away from driveways, paths and pipes, and it strongly dislikes waterlogged ('wet feet') soil. Best planted bare-root while dormant, from autumn through to mid-spring.
