Buy a grafted tree, not a seed-grown one - grafted trees fruit in about 4 years and reach solid production around year 7, while seed-grown trees can take up to 10 years and often disappoint. Left unpruned a tree can eventually reach 10-12m, though regular pruning keeps most garden trees considerably smaller. Frost-tender when young; established trees tolerate light frost to about -2 to -3°C. No reliable outdoor planting window is given for Canterbury/Otago.
